Latest Trends In The UK Hair and Beauty Industry For Success

Latest Hair And Beauty Industry Trends UK 2024

Here are some of the latest trends in the UK hair and beauty industry that hairdressers in London should know, for success in their hair jobs.

If you’re searching for hair jobs in London, staying on top of the latest trends in the hair and beauty industry is crucial to your success. The UK’s hairdressing industry is rapidly evolving, and keeping up with cutting-edge trends will not only help you stand out, but also attract more clients. Below, we explore the key hair and beauty trends that every London-based hairdresser should know to optimise career progress.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Haircare

Sustainability is one of the biggest shifts in the hair and beauty industry, with more eco-conscious clients looking for salons that prioritise the environment. Using eco-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free hair products is no longer just a trend—it’s a requirement for many consumers.

How to Leverage this Trend in Your Hair Job:

Offer eco-friendly services: Incorporate natural, organic products and promote them in your salon to appeal to eco-conscious clients.
Highlight your sustainability efforts: Show potential employers that you are passionate about sustainability by sharing your knowledge of eco-friendly products and waste reduction practices.
Eco-certification: Consider working for salons that are certified for sustainability, or help a salon achieve eco-certification by introducing sustainable practices.

Specialisation in Textured and Curly Hair

As London becomes increasingly diverse, demand for stylists skilled in textured and curly hair has skyrocketed. Specialising in curly hair can set you apart in a competitive job market.

How to Use this Trend to Secure a Hair Job in London:

Get trained in textured hair: Whether it’s mastering curly cutting techniques like the DevaCut or learning how to work with coils, adding these skills to your CV can make you stand out for hair jobs in London salons.
Promote your skills: Ensure your portfolio and social media profiles feature a variety of hair textures to show employers and clients that you can work with all hair types.
Offer consultations: Clients with textured hair often require personalized consultations. Demonstrating this skill to prospective employers can help secure long-term clientele for the salon.

Inclusive Beauty and Gender-Neutral Services

In London’s progressive hair industry, many salons are shifting towards inclusive and gender-neutral services. Offering gender-neutral pricing and creating a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of gender, is now a major trend.

How to Stand Out in Inclusive Hair Jobs:

Offer gender-neutral pricing: Show your adaptability by offering services that are priced based on hair length or time, rather than gender.
Foster an inclusive environment: Make your workspace a safe and welcoming place for clients from all backgrounds. This will make you an asset to any salon seeking to be more inclusive.
Highlight inclusivity in your personal branding: Salons in London are looking for hairdressers who can help them create an inclusive culture to win more new clients.

Skinification’ of Haircare

The trend of applying skincare principles to haircare, known as the ‘skinification’ of hair, is gaining popularity. More clients are focusing on their scalp health and seeking specialized treatments, similar to their skincare routines.

How Hairdressers Can Use This Trend to Get Ahead in Hair Jobs:

Offer scalp care services: Whether it’s scalp exfoliation or hydrating treatments, being knowledgeable about scalp care will give you an edge in landing jobs in high-end London salons.
Recommend personalised haircare routines: Understanding the needs of different hair types and offering personalised solutions can set you apart in interviews or when attracting clients.
Stock high-end scalp products: In a competitive job market, showing that you can introduce and upsell high-performance products, like scalp serums and treatments, is a plus for potential employers.

Personalisation and Tech-Driven Services

The demand for personalised haircare services has grown, with more clients expecting hairdressers to understand their unique hair concerns. Tech-driven tools, like AI-powered diagnostics and scalp analyzers, are being used to provide these personalised experiences.

How to Succeed in Hair Jobs by Leveraging Tech and Personalisation:

Offer bespoke consultations: Use your knowledge of diagnostic tools to provide tailored haircare solutions, helping salons stand out by offering unique, tech-enhanced services.
Upsell personalised products: Know the latest haircare brands that offer personalised treatments and use this knowledge to recommend the best products for each client’s needs.
Stay ahead with technology: Embrace the latest technologies in the hair industry to set yourself apart in hair jobs in London’s competitive market.

Low-Maintenance and ‘Lived-In’ Hair

The post-pandemic world has seen a surge in demand for low-maintenance hairstyles like balayage, root smudging, and textured cuts. Clients are seeking effortless looks that grow out gracefully and require fewer salon visits.

How to Capitalise on This Trend for Your Next Hair Job:

Specialise in low-maintenance styles: Master popular low-maintenance techniques like balayage and root melts, which are in high demand in London salons.
Offer styling tips for at-home maintenance: Educate clients on how to care for these low-maintenance styles between visits, which can boost client loyalty and make you invaluable to your employer.
Create long-lasting relationships: By providing clients with low-maintenance options, you help salons build long-term relationships with their clients, which is a key selling point when applying for hair jobs.

Develop A Social Media Following

Demonstrate your past hair client successes as a hairdresser with before and after photos on social media platforms. This can raise your profile with salon employers, new clients and recruitment agencies who have new job opportunities.

Conclusion: How to Succeed in Hair Jobs in London

To excel in hair jobs in London, staying updated on the latest industry trends is essential. From mastering sustainable haircare and textured hair techniques to offering gender-neutral services and low-maintenance styles, positioning yourself as a forward-thinking, trend-savvy hairdresser will give you an edge in the competitive London hair jobs setting.

Hair Qualifications and Experience Needed To Succeed as a Hairdresser in London

Ever wondered what hair qualifications and experience is needed to succeed as a hairdresser in London?

With its vibrant and dynamic beauty scene, London offers incredible opportunities for talented hair professionals. However, to stand out and thrive in this competitive market, it’s essential to have the right hair qualifications and experience.

In this article, we’ll explore what top London salons look for in a hairdresser and how you can prepare to meet these standards.

Essential Qualifications

  • NVQ/SVQ in Hairdressing The most fundamental qualification for a hairdresser in the UK is an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) in Hairdressing, typically at Level 2 or 3. These qualifications provide comprehensive training in hair cutting, styling, coloring, and basic treatments. Level 2 covers the basics, while Level 3 delves into more advanced techniques and salon management skills.
  • Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain hands-on experience while earning a qualification. Many top London salons offer apprenticeship programs that combine practical work with classroom-based learning. These programs are often highly regarded by employers because they provide real-world experience alongside formal education.
  • Specialised Courses Taking specialised courses can set you apart from other candidates. Courses in advanced colouring techniques, precision cutting, hair extensions, and bridal hairstyling can enhance your skillset and make you more attractive to top-tier salons. Renowned institutions like the London School of Barbering and the Vidal Sassoon Academy offer a variety of advanced training options.
  • Health and Safety Certification Understanding health and safety regulations is crucial in a salon environment. Many employers look for hairdressers who have completed courses in health and safety, ensuring they can maintain a safe and hygienic workspace for clients and colleagues.

Desired Experience

  • Work Experience in Reputable Salons Having experience working in reputable salons can significantly boost your employability. High-end London salons often seek candidates with a proven track record in similar environments. Gaining experience in well-known or high-traffic salons demonstrates that you can handle a demanding clientele and thrive in a fast-paced setting.
  • Customer Service Skills Exceptional customer service is a cornerstone of a successful hairdressing career. London salons value hairdressers who can build strong relationships with clients, understand their needs, and provide personalized service. Previous roles in customer-facing positions, whether within the beauty industry or in other sectors, can highlight your ability to deliver excellent customer experiences.
  • Portfolio of Work A well-curated portfolio showcasing your best work is essential. Include high-quality photos of various hairstyles, cuts, and colors you’ve created. Before-and-after shots are particularly effective in demonstrating your skill and creativity. A digital portfolio, such as a professional Instagram account, can also be a powerful tool to showcase your talent to potential employers.
  • Participation in Competitions and Events Taking part in hairdressing competitions and industry events can set you apart from other candidates. These activities demonstrate your passion for the craft and your commitment to excellence. Many salons appreciate hairdressers who are proactive in honing their skills and staying engaged with the broader hairdressing community.

Additional Skills and Attributes

  • Adaptability and Creativity London’s diverse clientele means you’ll need to adapt to various styles and preferences. Salons look for hairdressers who are creative and can think on their feet, offering clients innovative solutions and keeping up with the latest trends.
  • Strong Communication Skills Effective communication is vital in understanding client desires and explaining styling options and aftercare. Being able to clearly articulate your ideas and listen attentively to your clients ensures satisfaction and builds trust.
  • Team Player Working in a busy salon requires excellent teamwork. Employers value hairdressers who can collaborate well with colleagues, contribute positively to the salon environment, and support one another in delivering top-notch service.
  • Time Management and Efficiency The ability to manage your time effectively and work efficiently under pressure is crucial. London salons often have a high volume of clients, and being able to maintain quality while working swiftly is a highly sought-after skill.

Continuous Professional Development

  • Staying Updated with Trends The hairdressing industry is ever-evolving, with new trends and techniques emerging regularly. Attending workshops, seminars, and industry events helps you stay informed and brings fresh ideas to your clients.
  • Advanced Training and Certifications Pursuing further education and obtaining advanced certifications can boost your credentials. Courses in business management, advanced color correction, or even teaching qualifications can open new career pathways and enhance your professional standing.
  • Building a Professional Network Networking with other professionals in the industry can lead to job opportunities, collaborations, and valuable mentorships. Joining professional associations and online forums can help you connect with peers and industry leaders.

Hair Jobs London – Salary Guide 2022

Salary Guide For Hair Salon Staff in London 2022

For hairdressers in London, the demand for your hairdressing services during 2022 has been strong, with both permanent and especially temps, being sought by salons trying to cover this additional work.

So you will be interested in how this is impacting the market for salaries and this is covered by the latest salary guide.

With the absence of permanent staff applicants, salons are increasingly seeking hair temps and to cope with the additional demand they are seeing walk through the door in 2022.

It seems that with such high demand for hair staff, the current market is favouring staff, rather than the hair salons in terms of the salaries that can be expected for new hair job roles.

So, if you are a level 3 qualified hairdresser, with salon experience, this is a good time to consider a move to a new salon. Salary uplifts are possible.

Why Is Demand For Hair Temps So High?

Post Brexit and post pandemic, the gaping permanent staff shortage, reveals itself in its entirety. The result – heaps and heaps of permanent hair jobs for the discerning job seeker. That said, the industry is still in recovery from financial pain and this is very much reflected in the salaries offered, at this time in some places.

We do, however, witness hair salon owners as being favourably poised for the future and fully recognising the need of investment in staffing for the remaining two quarters and beyond.

In the salons, topics of conversation have changed recently. Customers have stopped talking about Covid jabs and now it’s hard to avoid the latest news on the war in Ukraine.

This Ukraine factor is impacting almost everyone, bringing frustration and inner anxiety to the population here and throughout Europe.

This means an increased need for some respite, in the form of relaxation, diversion therapy, and healing.

What better way, than the familiar, trusted hair and beauty services to provide that feel good factor, even if it is for a day or two, but usually the new hair style lasts much longer!

We cannot underestimate the powerful service hairdressers provide to their clients.

As well as the hairdressing service itself, the upliftment of someone to chat to, can be invaluable to some people who may have not spoken to anyone recently and be cautiously returning to going out or back to work again at the office.

The mood in salons is one of confidence, enthusiasm and reflection. With enormous positivity, hair salon owners and hair staff and hair salon owners have reached out to Rose Hadley with their recruitment needs for the remainder of 2022 and beyond.

The question of salary has come up, pretty much in every conversation. It’s clear, that hairdressers are highly prized and in high demand. This, combined with reduced supply are pushing up salaries for salons to attract and retain hair workers.

Below, is a salary guide for London for June 2022, i.e. gross basic. Commission on services and retail vary, with an average of 10% on services and 5% on retail.

Hair and Beauty Salons in London Move To Tier Four

Hair and Beauty Salons In London Tier Four Time

Hair and Beauty Salons In London move To Tier Four, which tightens the current rules more.

Tougher rules for London mean hair and beauty salons will be closed for now.

On Saturday 19th December 2020, as a big and sudden change for Christmas, Prime Minister, Boris Johnson announced that London and other areas in southern England which were currently under the Tier 3 level of coronavirus restrictions, will move to an even stricter new Tier 4.

Mr Johnson also said that a planned five-day easing of socialising rules that would allow up to three households to meet in “Christmas bubbles” will be cancelled for Tier 4 areas.

We know this means Hairdressers and barbers, beauty salons, tattoo parlours, nail salons, spas and beauty services, massage parlours and tanning salons all need to close for the time being until there is a change from Tier 4 back to Tier 3 or lower.

This is a big disappointment for hair salons and beauty salons in London and in all the affected Tier 4 restricted areas and we empathise with all our clients that will be affected by this.

Hopefully this will be just a temporary situation until the picture improves.

Here at Rose Hadley London, we are still open and working, currently from home while Tier 4 restrictions remain, so you can contact us on the following number after the Christmas and New Year holiday.

Rose Hadley Contact Number for November: 07790 488425

We can still receive CVs and set up online interviews via Zoom with candidates and employers, so that you are ready when the Christmas and New Year holiday ends and Tier 4 is lifted.

Here at Rose Hadley London, we can still be contacted and are available to help you with your New Year hair and beauty recruitment needs and hair and beauty job opportunities, especially during these uncertain times if you want to chat about your requirements.

Hair Jobs and Beauty Salons – Tier Three Update

Hair and Beauty Salons In London Move To Tier Three

London hair and beauty salons move to Tier 3.

Tougher rules for London, but hair and beauty salons will remain open.

The Health Secretary has announced that London will enter the strictest category for Covid 19 restrictions, Tier 3 from 16th December 2020.

Why Can Hair Salons and Beauty Salons Remain Open?

Hair and beauty salons can stay open because they come under the ‘personal care’ sector in the Government’s Covid Winter Plan, so are allowed to operate in Tier 3.

As we know the hair and beauty industry is popular with users and essential for the physical and mental wellbeing of everyone in London and the UK.

Here’s a full list of close contact personal care services that will remain open, even while London is in Tier 3 category for Covid 19 restrictions:-

  • Hairdressers and barbers
  • Beauty salons
  • Tattoo parlours
  • Nail salons
  • Spas and beauty services
  • Massage parlours
  • Tanning salons

Salon workers and clientele should continue to take all necessary precautions when visiting hair and beauty salons, including wearing a face covering, washing hands regularly, and social distancing where possible.

Time in a salon is an important treat in terms of looking good, but also in terms of relaxation and “me time”.

So after the return to opening of salons in July, initially for hairdressers, then later in the month for beauty salons, we hoped it would be plain sailing back to more like normality, albeit with PPE and hand sanitisers in place.

In November, we had a second lockdown, but we had measures we can take and procedures we can follow to minimise risks, which has helped our industry demonstrate why salons should remain open.

We are delighted for the hair and beauty industry that this new Tier three category for London, means that salons can remain open, keeping their valuable services available to clients.

Here at Rose Hadley London, we are still open and working, currently from home while Tier 3 restrictions remain, so you can contact us on the following number after the Christmas and New Year holiday.

Rose Hadley Contact Number for November: 07790 488425

We can still receive CVs and set up online interviews via Zoom with candidates and employers, so that you are ready when the Christmas and New Year holiday ends.

Here at Rose Hadley London, we can still be contacted and are available to help you with your New Year hair and beauty recruitment needs and hair and beauty job opportunities, especially during this time.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2021.

Hair Jobs and Beauty Salon Survey In August 2020

Hair and Beauty Salon Survey

Our popular hair jobs and beauty salon survey is here and it’s here in perfect time for your feedback.

Time for a haircut! Or even a nail manicure.

We are a couple of months into the reopening of the hair salons and we thought it was a good time to conduct our “Back To Salon” survey to find out what has been going on in hair and beauty salons in London.

The hair and beauty industry has been saying hello to it’s clients again, starting in July for hair salons and then later in August for beauty salons.

Needless to say, for many salons, it’s been wonderful to be able to offer haircuts and hair styling again, albeit with certain measures in place, such gloves, PPE face masks and face shields. However, due to the unique situation that we have all faced, some important questions remain in the in hair and beauty industry and this is what we are exploring in our salon survey.

Are We Ready?

The industry firmly puts out the welcome mat.

Owners and hairdressers, owners and beauty therapists are all back in the salons and have prepared the salons as per the Government guidelines.

Face masks are now a requirement for all staff and clients whilst in a hairdressing salon and barbers.

However, face screens are more convenient for hair and beauty staff. Clear plastic face visors provide a barrier between your face and your client. For this reason, they have been named as an official requirement for hairdressers and barbers who cannot maintain the full 2 metre social distance during any treatment or service.

Are Clients Ready To Get Back Into The Salons?

There have been an explosion of home haircuts and shaved heads and beards over the last few months. Some of that has not been pretty.

With a return to office work increasingly back on the on the horizon, a return to tidier hairstyles and nail and eyebrows could be back in our minds.

Are Clients Following The PPE Guidlines When Entering Your Hair and Beauty Salon?

Our survey covers three areas:

  1. PPE Measures

What PPE measures have you put in place?

2) Salon Footfall

Has salon footfall recovered? If not, what is the % footfall versus last year?

3) Salon Staffing

Are you staff furloughed?

Are your staff self employed?

What % of each has now returned to work?

4) Client Adherence To Risk Reduction

What % of clients wear a face mask?

What % of clients use hand sanitiser?

What % of clients adhere to the no or minimal chatting rule?

We look forward to sharing our survey results with you soon.
